The wrestling team competed at the district tournament Saturday where the boys took second place and the girls earned third place.

Freshmen Orion Cruz, Claudia Burgos, and Sydney Dawson,  sophomores Dominic Aurelio, Isaiah Drake, Jorge Segovia, Jake Wright, and Sierra Condon, juniors Zach Leyva, Damian Martinez, and Amia Rumback, and seniors Daniel Hernandez, Jose Marquez, Ricardo Cortes, Diego Gil, and Emma Mooneyham qualified for regionals at the district tournament. Cruz, Aurelio, Hernandez, Mooneyham and Condon were district champions.

The qualifying wrestlers will compete Saturday, Feb. 14 at Liberty High School in Frisco.

“I felt pretty good about making it to regionals,” Marquez said. “But I feel like I was supposed to make it to regionals because I made it to regionals last year.”

In order to be successful at the next level, Marquez and Mooneyham said they plan to repeat what has worked before.

“I plan on doing what I usually do,” Mooneyham said. “I usually pray a lot before I go into the tournament, and I focus and just drop everything. Just my world revolves around wrestling.”
