And the crowd goes wild

The boys varsity basketball team won a key district game last Friday in front of a rowdy student section.

After a season of early season victories and some mid-season losses, the Varsity Basketball team made a comeback with their 61-55 victory against Saginaw on our home court last Friday.

Three senior students, Caleb Rodriguez, Colby Craver, and Dion Jones set up an ESPN booth and gave play-by-plays during the game. When the rival team was called onto the court, the entire Ranger student section turned their backs to show that they didn’t care.

“It was great,” senior Michael May said. “Both the student sections for our team and their team were really hyped up and electric.”

The team did really well throughout the first half of the game, leading the whole time. Junior Tyron Mitts made a three point shot right before the halftime buzzer. The Rangers were up by ten at halftime.

One of the key plays of the game was the steal by junior Kristian West, assisted by  Mitts and Josh Jones at the bottom of the third quarter.

“I felt we accomplished something,” West said. “Wetalked and worked as a team to get the steal.

At the top of the fourth quarter, Saginaw had a brief celebration when the scoreboard malfunctioned and showed 50 to 2 with Saginaw on top. Before the end of the quarter, the students in the Ranger section took out their keys and told the Rough Riders to “go home.”

“Everything felt like it was in slow motion,” sophomore Ryan Flores said.

Midway through the fourth Saginaw gained a one-point lead after the Rangers had stayed on top most of the game. At that point, it came down to a few free throws. In the end, the Rangers came through.

“The best part about it was that we won, of course,” May said, “but it was a fun atmosphere to play in.”

The team will face off against another rival tonight when they play Boswell at home at 7:30 p.m.
