Mockingjay Part One, the third and most recent movie of the Hunger Games saga was recently released in theaters worldwide. The movie follows Katniss Everdeen as she leads the people of Panem in a revolt against their corrupt Capitol.

All hyped up blockbuster films come with their pros and cons, and Mockingjay is no exception. The plot moved slowly, but considering that it’s the first in a two-part adaptation of the book, I expected that to be the case.

Many film adaptations of book series turn the final book into a two-parter (this was done with the Twilight, Harry Potter, and Hobbit series to name a few) to milk the cash cow, which is pretty lame since a lot of the films’ runtime is just filler material.

The ending of the movie was also pretty infuriating. I’m not going to give it away, but it was a total cliffhanger, and for someone who hasn’t read the book series, that’s absolutely maddening.

This installment of the series centers much more on the politics than the other two, Hunger Games and Catching Fire. There’s a lot less action and a lot more dialogue making it more difficult for younger kids to follow, but I personally enjoyed the fact that there wasn’t much action. The few battle scenes were pretty intense.

Aside from the slow plot, Mockingjay was an inspiring movie. Katniss is a great figurehead for change and for the revolution happening in the districts of Panem.

Mockingjay Part One was a good movie, overall. The slow-moving action and cliffhanger ending are annoying, but Katniss’ strength as a character and the general plot of the film made it worthwhile. I recommend this movie to anyone who hasn’t seen it.
