Competition cheer won the state university novice division cheerleading open state championship at the University of North Texas Jan. 25.

So far the season has been very successful.

“We’ve improved in every competition,” cheer coach Jennifer Hamzy said.

They have won three competitions this year after only winning one of three last year.

“We were very, very excited. It was exciting to win,” Hamzy said. “We’ve made it very far and have more room to go further.”

With their win last weekend, the team qualifies for Nationals in San Antonio, but can’t afford to go. Hamzy said they hope to travel there next year.

“That would be our goal.”
