Her dream started in middle school, and she’d held on to it for years. Spring 2016 her dream came true when Sarah Dehondt started student teaching here. 

This year that dream became better than ever when Dehondt joined the Chisholm Trail Chorale department as the third teacher in the program. 

“I was influenced by my choir teachers from middle school and high school,” Miss Dehondt said. “My success through middle school and high school pointed me in the direction of being a choir director.” 

Beginning to student teach Dehondt had any choice of school but she chose Chisholm. 

“My soon-to-be father-in-law recommended Chisholm to me,” Dehondt said. “When he told me about the success of the program and how fast it grew over time, I knew that I wanted to learn from the program.” 

After a couple months of being a student teacher Dehondt said she considered the Hardy’s family. 

“I realized Mr. Hardy was a male version of myself,” Dehondt said. “After that it was really easy to have a relationship with them.” 

During the last two weeks of school last year  Dehondt found out the biggest news of her life. 

“I cried when I found out I got the job,” Dehondt said. “I never thought it was going to happen.” 

After receiving the big news Dehondt  said the Hardy’s held a small party and threw confetti at her to celebrate her success. 

Now Dehondt says she is an amazing choir director and works really hard even though there are some nerves there. 

“Exhilarating, terrifying, fulfilling,” Dehondt said. “It feels like I’m living out my purpose.” 

Just like the Hardy’s Dehondt said she wants the best for her students and wants them to look up to her. 

“It’s satisfying to being influential in young lives,” Dehondt said. “I want to facilitate you guys and help you find who you are as musicians.” 

Now that Dehondt is a director she has a lot on her plate even though as student teacher she had a sweepstakes choir last year and hopes for the same this year. 

“Getting sweepstakes last year as student teacher felt like nothing I have ever experienced before,” Dehondt said. “ I am anxious and very motivated to be successful and think the students will be as successful as last year. I can’t wait for this year’s  UIL competition.”
